If you’re throwing a western party, your western theme is not complete without an amazing horse cake. Of course, you could hire someone to make a cake covered in an edible image of a horse. Or you could find a horse cake topper. But those ideas may not fit your DIY party budget, and they leave little room for creativity.
If you aren’t looking for a horse cake, but instead you need a great unicorn cake for your little girl, keep reading! You don’t have to pay a pro or be a pro to make awesome cake creations, and more specifically, an amazing unicorn or horse birthday cake.
A horse cupcake cake is totally doable! And I will give you an easy horse cupcake template that will make you look like a master baker.

Wanting a horse cake for my girls’ western birthday party, I took to the internet for horse or pony cake ideas and cupcake cake ideas, and amidst a slew of odd looking horses, I found an amazing horse cupcake cake from a cake shop in Texas (the original link is long gone unfortunately).
I don’t live in Texas so I decided to try to re-create the pattern and share it with all DIYers out there so you too can make your own horse cake.
You may print this picture or better yet, download the pdf at the bottom of the post to help you position the cupcakes on your board.
This template is adaptable to any kind of horse. You only need to use a Twist Pop to make a horn and transform your horse cake into a fantastic unicorn cupcake cake!.
Instructions for the horse cupcake cake
You will need:
- Cake or foam board about 18″ x 22″
- 26 Cupcakes of your choosing
- Vanilla buttercream
- Chocolate buttercream
- Wilton 1M tip
- Black licorice
To cut the cost, instead of a cake board, I used an inexpensive foam board. I used several different cake batter flavors, which was another perk to making it myself.
I piped each cupcake with a Wilton 1M tip in a swirl pattern with a chocolate buttercream.
I used the same tip and vanilla buttercream for the white tail and mane, as well as the tip of the hooves and eye. I do really recommend getting the icing tip for ease and future cake projects, but if you don’t want to go get one, fill a medium or small resealable plastic bag with icing and cut the corner off. You may need to smooth out the texture but the bag will help you distribute the icing more quickly.
Interested in a good idea for added detail and texture? You could sprinkle on a thin layer of crumb coating. That might also create a nice contrast if you added it to just the horse’s mane or just the coat.
For the eye, mouth and eyelashes (the girls really wanted eyelashes), I used a black licorice. Hard candies would be another good option for these details. When you are making your shopping list, don’t forget that in order to achieve the cake shape and detail you want, you need more than a little frosting. Don’t skimp on the frosting!
If this cupcake cake size seems too small for your party, just do what I did. To feed the hungry crowd of cowgirls and cowboys, I make extra cupcakes wrapped in western themes wrappers available in with the cowgirl party decorations set in my shop. (I also have a cowboy party decoration set).
I loved the idea of a horse cupcake cake and my little horse lovers loved it too. I was able to keep the cake price very low and got to add my own touches by making it myself. The bonuses are that both kids and adults got to choose their favorite flavor cupcake and there was no messy cake to cut!
Here you have it in action!

OMG I made this for my 10yr old niece and she thought I bought it…LOL… I was so proud of myself, yes i did some crazy icing with whipped topping mixed in to lighten my chocolate but she loved it & so did everyone else. I made her cake kinda like yours but she loves brown horses & that of course is what hers looks like. Thanks for posting so I could be a hero for her since her grandma who was raising her passed 2 years ago…
I’m so glad my instructions helped you be a hero to your niece. This is why I do what I do, I truly think that going a little extra mile on special occasions is so precious. So I strive to make it a little easier for people to do that.
Hmm is anyone else experiencing problems with the images on this blog loading?
I’m trying to determine if its a problem on my end or if it’s the blog.
Any feed-back would be greatly appreciated.
I’m sorry you’re having trouble seeing my site. I can ask my service provider why this would be happening. All of my images have been reduced and optimized for web so there should be no reason why the images are not loading fast. It may have to do with your location. I will investigate. Thank you for letting me know.

what size paper do you print on?
Just regular 81/2 x 11 paper. It’s shrunk.
What did you enlarge the 8.5×11 to?
I didn’t, the print out is just for reference to arrange the cupcakes on the board.
Hey! I am gonna try this for my niece’s party. Did you pipe the icing onto the cupcakes before you arranged them on the board or after? What size board did you have to use to fit it all on there? Thanks! You did a great job!!
I honestly don’t remember the size of the board. I know I bought it that size at Walmart. My best guess is around 2′ by 2.5′. The cupcakes get iced after you set them up on the board. It’s a good idea to put a little frosting at the bottom of the cupcakes so they don’t slip. Have fun!
