Creating AI coloring pages of your kids might just be the coolest party idea you’ve never tried.
And let’s be honest, AI is taking over the world anyway, so we might as well put it to good use.
With just one photo and a little digital magic you can now turn your child into a pirate, a princess, or a rocket-riding superhero—on paper, in black-and-white, and ready for crayons.

Creating personalized AI coloring pages for your next party—especially for milestones like graduations or birthdays, is one of those “only-in-this-era” ideas that’s wildly creative and surprisingly easy to pull off.
Kids love seeing themselves in pictures, and when they get to color themselves in? Game. Over. It makes them feel like the star of the show.
Whether you include them in party favors or set up a little coloring station for guests, these custom pages are a hit.
And the best part? You don’t need fancy software or hours of design know-how.
Just a clear photo, a clever prompt, and the power of AI.
Yep, even your tech-phobic aunt could pull this off.
Disclaimer: This is not a tutorial on how to make coloring pages to make coloring books to sell. That is a longer and more involved process. The images you will get if you follow this tutorial are not perfect but easy to create and totally fun for your kids and your party!
Why Make AI Coloring Pages with Your Kid as the Hero?
Because kids love being the star of the show—and this time, it’s literally in black and white. When you turn them into the main character of a custom coloring page, you’re not just giving them an activity… you’re giving them a moment.
Whether they’re flying through space, taming a dinosaur, or graduating in cap and gown, these personalized pages are pure magic. You can print one or two for party fun, or go all out and create a whole DIY coloring book as a birthday or Christmas gift.
Add a custom cover, staple the pages together, and voilà: You’ve just made a gift they’ll treasure (and actually use).
AI Coloring Pages Video Tutorial
In this quick video, I’ll show you how to use the free Coloring Book Hero GPT to create custom AI coloring pages of your kids in less than 5 minutes.
It’s fast, it’s fun, and it’s the perfect activity or favor for birthdays, graduations, or just because they’re that cute.

Good news—this is one of those DIY projects that looks super impressive but only takes a few minutes (and zero glitter cleanup). Here’s what you’ll need to get started:
- A clear, front-facing photo of your child
- A free ChatGPT account
- Access to a printer and some paper
- Crayons, markers, or colored pencils for the fun part
- About 5 minutes of quiet time (I know, I know—dream big)
For this tutorial, I’ll be focusing on ChatGPT and my favorite custom GPT for simple kids’ coloring pages: Coloring Book Hero.
It’s made for exactly this type of project—cute, clean, black-and-white line art with no gray shading and no weird surprises.
Just good ol’ coloring page goodness.
Trust me, I’ve tried many, from free websites promising great coloring pages to Grok and Midjourney. Getting clean coloring pages is trickier than it sounds.
The best part? You don’t need to mess with complicated prompts—Coloring Book Hero already knows what you want and delivers perfectly kid-friendly results.
If you have a free ChatGPT account, you should be able to use it right away.

Just click “Explore GPTs” in the left-hand menu, search for “Coloring Book Hero,” and start generating.

👉 Or just click here: Coloring Book Hero
There are also tons of other GPTs out there with different coloring book styles. Some lean toward kawaii, others go full fantasy or more complicated coloring pages.
Feel free to explore!
And if you’d rather work in the regular ChatGPT chat window, don’t worry—I’ve got prompt ideas coming up next to help you create custom coloring pages from scratch.
Option 1: Use Coloring Book Hero (Easiest Way!)
- Log in to ChatGPT (a free account works for most people).
- Click on “Explore GPTs” in the left-hand menu.
- Type “Coloring Book Hero” in the search bar and select it.
- Upload a clear, front-facing photo of your child (or describe them).
- Type in a fun theme—something like:
“Make a coloring page of this girl as a mermaid with sea animals around her.”
- Let the GPT do its magic! You’ll get a black-and-white image, perfect for coloring.
🎉 Bonus: You can repeat this a few times with different themes (pirate, superhero, astronaut) and turn them into a mini DIY coloring book!
Option 2: Use the Regular ChatGPT Chat
If you prefer not to use a custom GPT, you can also make coloring pages directly in ChatGPT’s regular chat window (with GPT-4 or some free access accounts). Just type in a detailed prompt like:
“Create a simple black-and-white coloring page line drawing of a 7-year-old boy dressed as a cowboy, riding a horse. No shading, no background, just clean lines.”
You can upload a picture, tweak the age, theme, accessories, and details to match your child and party theme!
You will need to tell ChatGPT to give you clean lines, black and white, with no color and shading. If you use the Coloring Book Hero GPT, all those instructions are already embedded.
Another super easy option is FlexClip’s free Photo to Coloring Page tool, which instantly turns a regular photo into a printable black-and-white coloring page.
My Results and Prompts with Coloring Book Hero
This is my daughter at our hula party and the coloring page it created from a simple prompt.
Prompt: Make a coloring page of this little girl on the beach in Hawaii with the flower lei in her hair.

I just about melted when I saw it.
Prompt: Same little girl dancing the hula

If you want more distinctive face features try something like:
“Retain distinct facial features like the shape of the eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth, and jawline to keep the subject clearly recognizable”
GPT will probably give to a warning message if the subject is a kid and make a suggestion. Agree and let it do what it wants.
Recognizable features will be more accurate with pictures of adults.
Here is what Coloring Book Hero did with my daughter’s graduation picture:
Prompt: I want the graduate and the cap with the K and the wings and butterflies. I don’t want the background but I want the words Congrats! in a curve at the top

Sometimes it takes a few tries to get the result you want.
Prompt: Create a fun superhero coloring page inspired by the boy in the photo, with a similar hairstyle, confident smile, and general look standing heroically with his hands on his hips, wearing a cape and mask.

I loved it but wanted his initial on his chest.

Great, but it was still missing something.

Now you’re talking!
Fun Prompt Ideas to Use with a Photo
All of these prompts use a picture as a guide. The prompts don’t need to be complicated to work.
- “Create a black-and-white coloring page of this child dressed as a superhero flying through the sky. Include clouds and a city skyline.”
- “Make a line art coloring page of this child as a pirate on a treasure hunt with a parrot and a treasure chest.”
- “Turn this child into a princess in a castle with flowers and butterflies around her. Simple, clean lines for young kids to color.”
- “Draw this child as a wizard casting a spell with sparkles, a wand, and a pointy hat.”

- “Make a graduation-themed coloring page of this child wearing a cap and gown, holding a diploma, with stars and confetti around.”
- “Create a dinosaur-themed coloring page with this child riding a friendly T-Rex.”

- “Turn this child into an astronaut floating in space with planets and stars in the background.”
- “Make a fairy garden coloring page with this child as a woodland fairy, wings and all.”
- “Draw this child as a firefighter with a fire truck in the background.”
- “Create a coloring page of this child as a baker with a chef’s hat, decorating cupcakes.”
Troubleshooting your Images
Sometimes AI is like a toddler with markers—mostly brilliant, occasionally chaotic. Here’s what to do if your coloring pages don’t come out quite right:
👧 The face looks… off.
This happens sometimes with AI art, especially if the photo is blurry or turned at an angle. Try uploading a clearer, front-facing photo with good lighting—and skip the sunglasses and hats.
🌈 It’s in color, has grey sections, or too detailed.
If you’re not using Coloring Book Hero and generating in regular ChatGPT or other AI agent, be sure your prompt includes:
“black-and-white line art, no shading, no color, simple outlines for kids.”
Coloring Book Hero usually nails this on its own, but other AIs may need clearer instructions.
🧑 The picture doesn’t look like my kid at all!
That’s normal! Most AI tools don’t generate exact likenesses of kids. Think of it as a “stylized version” of your child living their best pirate/astronaut/fairy life.
If you really want more resemblance, keep refining the description or try another photo.
🧍 The body looks strange or has too many arms
Classic AI weirdness. These are called “artifacts”. It happens. Just hit “regenerate” and try again, or tweak your prompt to be simpler—something like “child in superhero costume standing with hands on hips.”
Or use a basic image editing program to erase any weirdness.
✏️ Some of the lines don’t connect.
That’s an AI quirk—it occasionally leaves little gaps in the outlines, which can be frustrating for younger kids trying to stay “inside the lines.” If it’s minor, it’s usually not a big deal. But if it bugs you (or your little perfectionist), you can:
- Open the image in a free editor like Windows Paint or Photopea and use the pen tool to close the lines manually.
- Or… just grab a black pen and connect the lines yourself after printing. Old-school fix for a new-school problem!
How to Download and Use Your Image
Once you’ve generated your masterpiece, it’s time to make it party-ready!
To download your AI coloring page:
- On desktop:
Right-click the image and select “Save image as…” to download it to your computer. - Or just click on the down arrow Download button. The image will save in your Downloads folder.

- On mobile:
Tap and hold the image until the menu pops up, then choose “Download image” or “Save to photos” depending on your device.
To print it:
- Open the file and select your printer.
- Use regular printer paper or upgrade to cardstock if you want a more durable party favor.
- Print in black-and-white to keep that perfect coloring page style. (Double-check your print settings if color sneaks in.)
How to use it at your party:
- Set up a coloring station with crayons or markers.
- Add it to favor bags as a custom take-home treat.
- Create a full DIY coloring book as a gift with a few different themes and a personalized cover—easy and so memorable.
Kids love seeing themselves in costume—and they’ll be so proud showing off their finished masterpiece.
