So why Rochers?

Ferrero Rocher chocolates work especially well because the gold wrapper looks fancy and the little paper skirt creates the perfect bottom edge for the graduation cap.

You only need a handful of simple supplies to turn your favorite gold-wrapped chocolates into cute little graduation treats.

  • Ferrero Rocher chocolates
  • Black cardstock
  • Embroidery thread in your school colors
  • Embroidery thread needle
  • Sticky dots
  • Scissors
  • Hole punch
  • Fork, to make the mini tassels
  • Optional: paper cutter, for cutting clean cardstock squares

Tips for Making Ferrero Rocher Graduation Caps

These Ferrero Rocher graduation caps are super simple to make, but a few little tricks will save you from sticky fingers and tiny tassel drama.

First, turn each Ferrero Rocher upside down so the flat bottom becomes the top of the treat. That gives you a nice base for adding the graduation cap.

Use black cardstock, not regular paper, for the square cap. Paper is too flimsy and can start curling, which is rude after you’ve already done the work.

For the tassel, don’t go overboard. You only need 5 or 6 wraps of embroidery thread around the fork tines to make a cute mini tassel.

You can use any color embroidery thread to match your graduation party theme, school colors, or dessert table setup. Yellow, Blue, Gold, or school colors all look great.

And my biggest sanity-saving tip: use sticky dots instead of glue.

They make it so much easier to attach the cardstock square, tassel, and little black dot without waiting for glue to dry or accidentally decorating your fingers instead of the chocolates.

Instructions

  1. Make the mini tassel.
Wrap embroidery thread around the tines of a fork 5 or 6 times. Tie a small piece of thread between the top tines and double-knot it. Slide the tassel off the fork, then cut the loops at the bottom to create the tassel.
  2. Add the hanging thread.
Use a needle to thread another small piece of embroidery thread through the top loop of the tassel. Tie it off about 1 to 1 1/2 inches from the tassel, then trim the extra thread at the knot.
  3. Cut the cardstock cap.
Cut a small square about 1.5 inches wide out of black cardstock. Cardstock works much better than regular paper because it stays flat and gives the cap a cleaner look.
  4. Attach the cap to the chocolate.
Turn the Ferrero Rocher upside down and use a sticky dot to attach the cardstock square to the flat bottom of the chocolate, right on the little paper skirt.
  5. Attach the tassel.
Use a sticky dot to attach the tassel string to the center of the cardstock square, letting the tassel hang off one corner.
  6. Add the black dot.
Use a hole punch to make a small black dot from the black cardstock. Place it over the center of the cap where the tassel is attached.
  7. Make a whole tray.
Repeat until you have enough for your graduation party dessert table, plus a few extra for β€œquality control.” Chocolate crafting is serious business.

Ferrero Rocher Graduation Caps FAQs

Can I make these Ferrero Rocher graduation caps ahead of time?

Yes, and you absolutely should if you’re making a whole tray. You can make them 1 to 2 weeks ahead and store them in a cool, dry place until party time. Just don’t put them somewhere warm unless you want your cute caps to turn into a graduation chocolate puddle situation.

Do I need to refrigerate Ferrero Rocher graduation caps?

No, refrigeration isn’t necessary. In fact, the fridge can sometimes make chocolate sweat when it comes back to room temperature. Keep them in a cool spot away from direct sun and kitchen heat.

Can I use glue instead of sticky dots?

I don’t recommend it. Sticky dots are much easier, cleaner, and faster. Plus, they hold the cardstock and tassel well without waiting for glue to dry. Tiny graduation caps are cute. Glue strings everywhere? Less cute.

What size should the black cardstock square be?

About 1.5 inches square works well for a Ferrero Rocher chocolate. It’s big enough to look like a graduation cap without swallowing the whole chocolate like it’s trying to wear a roof.

Can I use paper instead of cardstock?

Cardstock is much better. Regular paper can curl or bend too easily, while cardstock stays flat and gives the graduation cap a cleaner, sturdier look.

What kind of thread should I use for the tassel?

Embroidery thread works great because it has the right thickness and comes in lots of colors. You can use black, gold, white, or match the tassels to your school colors or graduation party theme.

How thick should the tassel be?

Not too thick. Wrap the embroidery thread around the fork tines 5 or 6 times, and that’s plenty.

Can I use other chocolates for this graduation cap craft?

You can, but Ferrero Rocher chocolates work especially well because the gold wrapper makes them look fancy and party-ready. The little paper skirt also creates the perfect bottom edge for the graduation cap, so the treat has that cute cap-and-gown look without any extra work. If you use another round chocolate, choose one with a wrapper or paper cup that gives you a similar little β€œskirt” under the cardstock cap.

Are these good for a graduation dessert table?

Yes, they’re perfect for a graduation dessert table because they’re cute, bite-sized, and easy for guests to grab. They also look extra polished without requiring cake-decorating skills, which is always a win.
